Mental Health Advice

The Law Centre provides free, independent advice and representation to patients and others affected by mental health law. We can advise patients about their rights under mental health law either in hospital or in the community and whether detained or informal.

We can advise and represent on all areas of mental health law including:

Our service covers the Avon and Wiltshire and Gloucestershire Mental Health Trust areas. We can also travel to other locations in certain circumstances. We have a Legal Services Commission contract to provide advice, assistance and representation in mental health law. Applications to the MHRT are not means tested whereas other types of case are, e.g. Managers’ Hearing.

The mental health team is Ronan Mulqueeney and Angela Truell who are both solicitors and members of the Law Society’s approved Panel of Solicitors for MHRTs, with many years experience of mental health law between them.
